The European Union and Ukraine have recently finalized new trade terms. This agreement ensures continued trade flows between the regions. Specifically, the new period lasts from June 6, 2024, to June 5, 2025. The agreement suspends import duties and quotas on Ukrainian exports. However, safeguard measures are included in the agreement. Thus, they are designed to protect EU farmers. An “emergency brake” can quickly restore tariffs. This would happen if Ukrainian imports significantly disrupt the EU market. Furthermore, stronger safeguards are included for eggs, poultry, sugar, oats, corn, groats and honey. Thus, these measures address concerns raised by EU member states.
