China has significantly increased imports of wheat and barley from Russia from January to July 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. At the same time, purchases of corn have fallen sharply, reports Interfax.

According to the State Customs Administration (SCA) of the People’s Republic of China, Russian wheat was imported for 48.236 million dollars during this period compared to 6.381 million dollars in the previous year (7.6-fold increase) and barley for 112.478 million dollars compared to 25.075 million dollars (4.9-fold increase).

At the same time, imports of corn fell more than threefold, from 64.31 million dollars to 20.911 million dollars.

Purchases of cereal crops have increased. Imports of buckwheat, for example, almost doubled from 28.627 million dollars in January-July 2023 to 51.053 million dollars and oats from 15.4 million dollars to 31.36 million dollars.

At the same time, China reduced imports of Russian soybeans to USD 277.088 million from USD 434.01 million in January-July last year. Purchases of rapeseed also fell, from 95.078 million dollars to 77.587 million dollars.

As reported, Russia can currently only supply spring wheat and barley to China. According to Russian experts, however, winter wheat and barley have the greatest potential. Russia is seeking permission to supply these crops to the Chinese market as well.

In December 2023, Russian and Chinese experts held talks in Beijing with representatives of the Department of Animal and Plant Quarantine of the State Administration of Animal and Plant Quarantine of China (GACC) and the Bureau of Import and Export Food Safety Inspection. During the talks, the Russian side presented detailed materials on the results of monitoring the quarantine conditions of wheat-growing areas in Russia, which was carried out jointly with leading scientific organizations.

The Russian Federation is also counting on the approval of rapeseed deliveries from all regions. So far, only the regions of Siberia and the Far East have this possibility.
