Romania Completes Giurgiulesti Port Acquisition to Boost Black Sea Role

A major strategic shift is unfolding along the Danube. The Romania Giurgiulesti port acquisition marks a significant move in the region’s transport and logistics landscape. Furthermore, it signals Romania’s growing ambition to strengthen its position as a key hub connecting the European Union with neighboring regions.

Romania Giurgiulesti Port Acquisition: Deal Finalized with EBRD

Romania has finalized an agreement for the National Company “Sea Ports Administration” (SPA) to acquire ICS Danube Logistics. This company is the operator of the Giurgiulesti International Port. Moreover, the acquisition involves a purchase from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Romanian government announced this on its official website.

“Thanks to this agreement, the Port of Constanta will strengthen its strategic role in the Black Sea region, becoming a regional hub that ensures connections between the European Union and neighboring regions, particularly in the context of creating new transport routes,” the statement noted.

Strategic Investments Planned to Modernize Port Infrastructure

It is also noted that the National Company “Sea Ports Administration” (SPA) of Constanta will invest in the long-term development of the Giurgiulesti International Port. These investments target several key objectives. Specifically, they are aimed at:

  • Increasing the port’s capacity.
  • Modernizing its infrastructure.
  • Strengthening its position in the Black Sea region and the Danube basin.

Therefore, the planned investments go well beyond simple ownership transfer. Additionally, these investments will enhance the port’s strategic role. Furthermore, the port is well-positioned to also participate in the future reconstruction of Ukraine.

Port Location and Infrastructure Make It a Regional Asset

As a reminder, the Giurgiulesti International Port sits at the mouth of the Danube, just a few kilometers from the Romanian border and close to the Ukrainian border. Consequently, its geographic position gives it exceptional value for regional trade flows. The port can accommodate both river and sea vessels. In addition, its infrastructure includes:

  • An oil terminal.
  • Two grain terminals.
  • A terminal for other goods.
  • A business park.

Thus, the Romania Giurgiulesti port acquisition brings a strategically located and well-equipped facility under Romanian state management. As a result, Romania is now better placed to play a leading role in Black Sea logistics and post-war Ukrainian reconstruction efforts.
