Brazil China sorghum trade resumed in January as Brazil exported a shipment of sorghum to China for the first time since 2014. However, according to Brazilian government data, the volume of supplies was so small that it fit into a single shipping container, Oil World reports.
Brazil China Sorghum Trade: Historic Shipment Details
“The 25.83-ton shipment was Brazil’s first sorghum export to China in 12 years, shortly after 10 trading companies were allowed to export the grain to China in November 2025,” the report said.
According to an industry source who wished to remain anonymous, the shipment is most likely intended for a smaller importer or even for quality assessment.
Historical Context and Current Status
According to official data, China last purchased Brazilian sorghum in 2014. Furthermore, annual purchases then amounted to just under 1,375 tons. Since then, official data no longer reflects sales of Brazilian sorghum to China.
As noted by Glauber Silveira, executive director of the Brazilian Corn and Sorghum Producers Association, he has no information about new sales to China.
Production Outlook and Export Potential
Overall, Brazil exports relatively little sorghum compared to its main agricultural crops, such as soybeans. However, according to forecasts by the state agency Conab, the sorghum harvest in 2025/26 MY will grow by almost 10% to around 6.7 million tons.
