Wheat crop condition in France remains worst in 5 years

As of March 3, monitoring data from FranceAgriMer indicates that 74% of soft wheat crops in France are currently in good to very good condition, an improvement compared to last year’s figure of 68%, although it falls short of the five-year average.

Experts have observed that the development conditions for wheat crops this year are superior to those of the previous year, resulting in a denser crop population relative to 2024. The crops that were sown between November 1 and 15 following sunflower planting have faced the most adverse effects. Cold weather earlier in the year has caused plant losses and restricted growth. Ultimately, the growth results will hinge on the rainfall and temperatures experienced in April and May during the crucial ear-filling period.

Additionally, as of the latest report, 82% of durum wheat crops are rated in good to excellent condition, up from 73% last year, while winter barley has also fared well, with 70% classified as good to excellent, compared to 69% previously.

Moreover, the sowing of spring barley is ongoing, with 65% of the planned area now planted, marking a significant rise from 28% in 2024 and surpassing the five-year average of 55%.
