Ukraine resumes duty-free sugar supplies to EU

The sugar market in Ukraine demonstrates stability, but with the beginning of 2025 the opening of the European Union market creates new prospects for Ukrainian producers. This is reported by analysts of the agricultural cooperative PUSK, established within the WAR.

As of January 1, 2025, Ukrainian producers gained access to the EU market thanks to new trade liberalization agreements. The move has opened the door for Ukraine to export large volumes of sugar to the European market without additional duties, which had previously held back supply growth. “The opening of the EU market is an important development for our industry. Now contracts for exports to Europe are just starting to be concluded, but already in February-March we expect a significant revitalization of this direction. In January we actively exported sugar to Turkey and African countries, but the European market is gradually becoming a priority,” said the analytical department of the PUSK cooperative.

The release prices for sugar in Ukraine are 23-24.5 thousand UAH/ton. Analysts note that this level is relatively stable, but seasonal factors and the expansion of exports may cause a gradual increase in cost in the near future. “January-May is usually a period of seasonal increase in sugar prices. The current price level is likely to be one of the lowest and the cost will reverse upward in the future. The opening of the European market will also contribute to this dynamic,” PUSK added.

It is expected that already in the coming months the share of European supplies in the export structure will increase, which, in turn, will have a positive impact on the Ukrainian economy.
