Ukraine has already exported more than 90,000 tons of sugar in the 2024/2025 marketing year (i.e. from 1 September). This was announced by the acting CEO of Ukrsakhar, Yana Kavushevska.
According to her, exports are going both to countries that are already “traditional” for Ukrainian sugar – the Middle East and North Africa – and to new destinations such as Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
“It should be borne in mind that white sugar is primarily transported in containers, and large container ships do not yet call at Odessa, so the logistics remain complicated and expensive. The sugar must first be delivered to the port of Constanta, and from there a delivery to the country of destination must be considered. Fobbing to Constanta (delivery of sugar to the port) costs around 110 US dollars, while European sugar, for example from central Poland, is four times cheaper to bring to the northern port. And even under these conditions, Ukrainian producers compete with European producers on the world market”, – she specifies.
The Ministry of Economy is also currently working on the possibility of establishing duty-free trade with European countries outside the EU.
These include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and Switzerland. The logistics to these countries are accessible and the markets are attractive. For obvious reasons, we will not be able to export to traditional markets such as Kazakhstan and Tajikistan before 2022,” says Yana Kavushevskaya.
