U.S. resumes soybean exports to Pakistan

After lifting a two-year ban, the U.S. has restarted its soybean exports to Pakistan. On February 18, 2025, Pakistan welcomed its initial delivery of 65,000 tons of soybeans from the U.S., with an additional 200,000 tons anticipated shortly, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A restriction on genetically modified crops that was enacted in 2022 halted the import of U.S. soybeans, causing exports to drop from $373 million in the 2021/22 period to none in 2023/24. However, in the fall of 2024, Pakistan revised its import regulations, allowing for the resumption of soybean shipments. This reopening of the market is expected to benefit both American producers and Pakistan’s food and feed industries, which rely on imported goods.

Experts predict that the removal of these restrictions will enhance trade relations between the U.S. and Pakistan in the agricultural sector, particularly concerning other grains and oilseeds.
