U.S. plans to expand corn acreage in 2025

According to CoBank’s forecasts, U.S. farmers will increase corn acreage in spring 2025 by 4.2% per year – up to 94.5 million acres, which will be driven by rising prices for the grain amid limited global stocks, high demand and record ethanol production, Reuters reports.

In particular, farmers’ refusal to harvest corn for silage due to low prices will likely lead to a 5% increase in corn for grain acreage to 87.06 million acres. However, potential trade disputes with Canada and Mexico could jeopardize demand, especially for ethanol and corn exports to Mexico.

At the same time, the country’s soybean, wheat, and sorghum acreage will decline. For example, soybean acreage in 2025 could be 3.6% less than the previous year’s figure of about 84 million acres, spring wheat could be 5.9% less, to 10 million acres, and sorghum could be 9.5% less, to about 5.7 million acres.
