The Turkish government has set tariff quotas for the import of sunflowers and sunflower oil for 2025, reports Grain On-Line, citing Haberler.com.
The quotas apply to Turkish processors who have purchased 1 million tons of sunflowers from local farmers between July 1 and November 30, 2024:
- on imports of 1 million tons of oil sunflowers between January 1 and April 30 with a duty rate of 8%;
- on imports of 1,400,000 tons of unrefined sunflower oil between 1 January and 30 April with a duty rate of 20%.
The customs duties on imports of these goods in excess of the quota are 27% and 36% respectively.
Thus, during the period from January 1 to April 30, 2025, when domestic stocks of Turkish sunflower and sunflower oil are exhausted, imports under the quota will be possible at a reduced rate of duty.
After April 30, 2025, when the new harvest is due, domestic farmers will be protected from cheap imports, thus securing their income.
The Turkish government expects that this measure will motivate farmers to grow sunflowers in the 2025-2026 season while meeting domestic demand and preventing possible speculative fluctuations in sunflower oil prices.
