Tunisia’s agriculture ministry expects olive oil production to increase by around 55 percent this season, boosting both exports of the green gold and the country’s public finances, Reuters reports.

“After a significant drop in the last two seasons, production has returned to normal levels this season at 340,000 tons,” said Dorsaf Ben Ahmed, an agriculture ministry official.

Last season, Tunisian olive oil exports reached a record TND5.1 billion (US$1.65 billion) in cash terms, boosted by a sharp rise in global olive oil prices. Last season, Tunisia was the second largest exporter of olive oil in the ranking of the world’s largest exporters of olive oil, with an indicator of 180 thousand tons. The olive harvest season in Tunisia begins in October and lasts until the end of February.
