US President Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to impose import duties of 100% on BRICS countries if they try to create their own currency or an alternative to the US dollar in global trade, TASS reports.
In his statement published on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that the US will require a commitment from these countries not to create a new BRICS currency or support other currencies that can replace the US dollar. Otherwise, the countries will face duties of 100% and lose the ability to sell their goods in the U.S. market.
Trump believes that the idea that the BRICS countries want to abandon the dollar is untenable and that only the US has the right to set the rules of international trade. He also expressed confidence that the BRICS countries will not be able to replace the US dollar in international trade.
Recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the summit in Kazan that the BRICS is not fighting the dollar and is not abandoning it. The countries just have to look for alternatives, as they are “not allowed to work” with the U.S. currency. BRICS includes Russia, Brazil, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, UAE and Indonesia.
Earlier it was reported that advisers to US President Donald Trump confirm his determination to impose duties on goods from Mexico and Canada in the amount of 25% from February 1.
