In January 2025, Tajikistan significantly increased the volume of wheat imports, having purchased 112.8 thousand tons of the grain. As ASIA-Plus reports, this is 2.4 times more compared to the same period last year. Such an increase in imports emphasizes the growing domestic demand and the need to strengthen food security, experts say.

Kazakhstan remains the main supplier of wheat to Tajikistan. According to operational data, from the beginning of MY 2024/25 (September) to February 16 this year Tajikistan exported 789 thousand tons of grain (an increase of 47%).

In 2023/24 MY Tajikistan imported 1.02 million tons of Kazakh wheat (a season earlier this figure was 1.08 million tons) and took second place in the ranking of top importers of this grain.

Recall that Tajikistan’s annual demand for wheat is more than 2 million tons. Almost half of this volume is provided by domestic production – the country’s wheat harvest averages about 1 million tons.

Due to the increase in population, Tajikistan intends to increase wheat imports to 1 million 285 thousand tons per year, and its own wheat production – to 1 million 32 thousand tons.
