According to preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics, Romania is EU sunflower leader in crop production across all major crops in 2025. This growth is driven primarily by higher yields and expanded sown area.

Specifically, the area sown to oilseeds, grains, vegetables, and potatoes increased. At the same time, pulses saw a decline. However, production increased across all categories, from grains and oilseeds to vegetables and potatoes.

Romania EU Sunflower Leader in Acreage and Output

At the European Union level, Romania ranked first in sunflower and corn acreage. Additionally, it led sunflower production. Furthermore, the country ranked among the top three in corn production.

The total area sown to grains increased by 0.7% to 5.1 million hectares. Meanwhile, production increased by 37.2% to 24.5 million tons, primarily due to higher yields. Wheat occupied 2.31 million hectares (45.3% of the area). In comparison, corn occupied 1.97 million hectares (38.6%).

Wheat production increased by 36.6% to 12.69 million tons. That accounts for more than half of all grain production. Meanwhile, pulse production nearly doubled (93.7%) to 244,000 tons, thanks to improved yields.

Oilseed Sector Growth and Other Crops

The oilseed crop sector also demonstrated significant growth. Production increased by 60.9% to 4.81 million tons. Additionally, area increased by 11% to 2.13 million hectares. Specifically, rapeseed production more than doubled to 2.5 million tons. Sunflower production increased by 36.5% to 2.06 million tons. However, soybean production declined by 15.4% to 253,000 tons.

Among other crops, vegetable production increased by 20.8% to 2.53 million tons. Potato production increased by 10% to 1.16 million tons. Grape production increased by 14.4% to 809,000 tons. Meanwhile, orchard fruit production decreased by 12.9% to 612,000 tons due to lower yields.
