Exports of sunflower seeds from the Republic of Moldova from January to August this year amounted to 344.56 thousand tons, which is 2.7 times the volume of exports in the first eight months of last year and exceeds the figure for the whole of 2023 (300.461 thousand tons), reports NOI.md.
“Traditionally, farmers are faced with the choice of selling their produce to an exporter or to a local processor. In 2024, many of them opted for the first option, mainly due to the longer payment terms of processors, which in turn were affected by the lower prices of sunflower oil on international markets, as well as delays in the collection of receivables, which range from 60 to 120 days,” Moldovan agricultural expert Yuriy Rizha explains the increase in deliveries.
The direction of Moldovan sunflower exports remains stable this year. Thus, in the first 8 months of 2024, 57% of oilseeds were sold to Romania (196,062 thousand tons), 16% – to Turkey (54,266 thousand tons), 8% – to Bulgaria (28,659 thousand tons).
At the same time, there is an increase in sunflower exports to Turkey in 2024, as Turkish importers offer a higher average price compared to other buyers – an average of 8.3 lei/kg. At the same time, the average price at which Romania and Bulgaria bought Moldovan sunflower seeds is 7.8 lei/kg.
