According to a report from Reuters, India’s sugar production for the marketing year 2024/25, which concludes in September, is projected to dip below consumption levels for the first time in eight years, attributable to diminished sugarcane availability in crucial states, as indicated by the trade association on Tuesday.

The Sugar Trade Association of India noted that the nation is predicted to yield 25.8 million tons of sugar, a decrease of 19.1 percent compared to the previous year, while consumption is anticipated to reach 29 million tons.

The association added that sugar mills in Maharashtra, the foremost sugar-producing state in India, are shutting down sooner than typical. The anticipated sugar production in Maharashtra stands at 8 million tons, a decline from 11 million tons last year.

The report also highlighted that the combination of production falling short of consumption and projected sugar exports of 1 million tons is likely to drive down India’s starting stocks for the 2025/26 marketing year to 3.78 million tons, compared to 7.98 million tons the previous year.
