India has extended the duty-free import of yellow peas for another two months until December 31, 2024. BW writes about this.
It is pointed out that such a decision is aimed at lowering the price of pulses. While India is a major producer of pulses, production has not kept pace with demand, which has led to an increase in imports.
India’s pulses production has increased from 16.3 million tons in 2015-16 to 24.5 million tons in 2023-24, but demand has also increased to 27 million tons.
Overall, the country imports pulses worth $3.74 billion during 2023-2024.
