The condition of maize crops in the US deteriorated slightly last week, in line with market participants’ expectations. The proportion of corn seedings in excellent and good condition fell to 67% (68% in the previous week and 57% a year ago). This was reported by the Grain On-Line agency, citing the US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
The USDA estimates this year’s corn harvest at 389.7 million tons, which is 2% less than last year, but 5% more than the five-year average.
The condition of soybeans has improved slightly. Sixty-eight percent (67% or 54%) of the crop is now in good to excellent condition.
The USDA anticipates that the gross soybean crop could increase to 120.7 million tons, which is 6% more than last year and 7% more than the five-year average.
At 74%, the proportion of spring wheat acreage in excellent to good condition is significantly higher than a year ago (41%). By August 4, spring wheat had been harvested on 6 % of the acreage (8 % at the same time last year, 10 % on average over the last five years).
Winter wheat was harvested on 88% (85% and 86%) of the areas.
