In 2024, China’s total grain production reached an all-time high of 706.50 million tons, up 11.09 million tons (+1.6%) from the previous year. Rice, wheat and corn were the main cereal types involved in the sample survey.

The planted area of cereals in China totaled 119,319 thousand hectares, up 351 thousand hectares (+0.3%) from the previous year, contributing to an increase in production of nearly 20%.

Higher yields yielded good results. China’s grain yield per unit area was 5,921 centners/hectare, up 75.8 centners/hectare (+1.3%) from 2023. Higher yields contributed to an increase in grain production of more than 80%.

Planting pattern was adjusted, intercropping system was developed and abandoned land was reclaimed. The central government continued to increase support to grain producers. The minimum purchase price for wheat and early Indian rice continued to increase, subsidies to maize and soybean producers and subsidies to rice producers remained stable, and full cost and revenue insurance for these three cereals was fully covered by the government.
