Heavy rainfall washes away freshly planted fields in the UK

Rainfall on a scale that one farmer described as “biblical” has washed away freshly planted crops and flooded grain stores in many parts of the UK, with farms in England hardest hit by last weekend’s flooding.

After a week of near perfect sowing conditions, the amount and intensity of the weekend’s rainfall was catastrophic for many farmers.

Andrew Robinson, who farms 1,200 hectares of land in the Toddington area of Bedfordshire, sowed wheat and barley on a third of that area last week, but after the 103-143mm of rainfall on Sunday (September 22) he expects the crop to fail.

Despite the disastrous situation, some farmers have benefited from the rainfall. For example, sugar beet growers in the east of England.
