French wheat exports to rise to 8 million tons

Argus Media believes that soft wheat exports from France outside the EU will increase to 8 million tons in 2025–2026.

France is the largest grain producer in the EU. The country has just completed its harvest. The British price agency estimated the gross harvest at 33.4 million tons. Meanwhile, the European Commission has recently stopped publishing statistics on French wheat exports.

Last season was extremely unsuccessful for French farmers. As a result, wheat exports fell to their lowest level this century — 3.5 million tons.

Despite the expected recovery in exports in 2025–2026, Argus predicts that France will end the season with its largest soft wheat stocks in two decades — 4 million tons.

“With stable demand domestically and in Europe, the growth in production in France means that it is necessary to actively export to third countries,” Reuters quotes the price agency as saying.

To balance supply, exports outside the EU will need to reach 9.5 million tons. However, abundant global supply and a trend toward reduced wheat shipments from France to Algeria and China are limiting export potential, Argus analysts note.

In July, the state agency FranceAgriMer estimated exports of French soft wheat outside the EU at 7.5 million tons, with carryover stocks at 3.9 million tons.
