The maize harvest in France is progressing more slowly than it has for 11 years, as unfavorable weather conditions are causing the leading European agricultural producer to struggle.

According to FranceAgriMer, only around 6% of the harvest had been harvested by October 7, compared to 50% the previous year. This is the lowest level since 2013.

France produces around 15 million tons of corn annually – the largest amount in Europe – and exports 40% of it, mainly to neighbouring countries, according to the industry association Intercereales. The surplus from the maize trade amounts to 1 billion euros (1.1 billion dollars).

The harvest could be further affected by the remnants of Hurricane Kirk, which caused heavy rainfall and flooding in northern areas. Fields are already saturated with moisture after the wettest September in 25 years.

This year’s bad weather has also damaged other crops. Plantings of common wheat and winter barley are below the five-year average and wine production is expected to fall by 22%.
