Exports of sunflower oil from the Republic of Moldova in the first half of 2024 decreased by 68.3 thousand tons, down 45% compared to the same period last year.
In the 2023/2024 season, exports amounted to 191.7 thousand tons, which is 16.6% less than in the previous period, writes Agroexpert, citing data from agro-market expert Iurie Ria.
In the last three months of this year, from April to June, only 4.6 thousand tons were sold, 12 times less than in the previous year. At 14.82 lei per kilogram in 2024 compared to 17.61 lei per kilogram in 2023, the utilization price was also not conducive.
“Difficulties in the supply of raw materials and the downward trend in world market prices had a significant impact on Moldovan sunflower oil exports in 2024,” said Ria.
There were also changes in export destinations. In 2023, Romania was the absolute frontrunner with 196,400 tons, and in the period January-June 2024, Egypt with 19,100 tons. A considerable amount of Moldovan oil was purchased by Spain – 12,000 tons – and Italy – 6,000 tons. It is noted that the contracts with Egypt were the most favorable in terms of cost – 14.76 lei / kg. For comparison: Spain – 14.50 lei/kg, Romania – 14.64 lei/kg.
