EU plans to sharply restrict sugar imports from Ukraine

The European Commission is preparing to impose major restrictions on the importation of Ukrainian sugar following complaints from European producers regarding decreasing prices. This information was communicated by Reuters, which cited three sources.

According to those in attendance, EU Agriculture Commissioner Christoph Hansen mentioned the objective to restrict sugar imports during discussions with leaders of French farmers’ unions and industry stakeholders at the Paris Farm Show in late February.

While the European Commissioner did not detail the extent of the proposed import reductions, sources present at the meeting indicated that it would be “well below” the current figures.

Hansen also indicated his intention to address other imports from Ukraine, including grain, though he refrained from providing specifics, as reported by two sources.

In response to the agency’s inquiry, the European Commission acknowledged awareness of the concerns voiced by EU farmers and member states regarding specific agricultural product imports.
