The European Union (EU) has recognized Malaysian palm oil certification (MSPO) as a reliable standard that can contribute to compliance with new EU regulations on deforestation, according to the Borneo Bulletin.

A statement from Malaysia’s certification bodies said the recognition strengthens the role of the MSPO standard as an effective government structure and highlights the country’s contribution to global trade.

The new EU deforestation regulation (EUDR), coming into force in December, requires companies trading in soy, beef, palm oil, timber, cocoa, and coffee, as well as certain products such as leather, chocolate, and furniture, to ensure that land linked to those products has not undergone deforestation since 2020.

MSPO began as a voluntary palm oil certification scheme in Malaysia, the world’s second-largest palm oil exporter. In January 2020, it became mandatory for producers. The certification assures buyers and regulators that palm oil comes from legal sources and avoids deforestation. Furthermore, the digital tracking system provides complete supply chain transparency and fosters trust among stakeholders worldwide.

Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani stated that the recognition confirms Malaysia’s leadership in sustainable palm oil production and fully engages more than half a million smallholders in the sustainability agenda.
