Ethiopia Becomes Africa’s Top Wheat Producer with Record Harvest

Ethiopia top wheat producer status in Africa is now a confirmed reality. For the first time in history, Ethiopia has achieved a record production volume of over 33 million tons of wheat, surpassing all other African nations. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made this announcement following a personal inspection of a 2,150-hectare wheat field in the Oromia region. Furthermore, this milestone marks a turning point in the country’s agricultural development and food security story.


Ethiopia Top Wheat Producer: From Net Importer to Record Harvest

The transformation Ethiopia has undergone in just a few years is remarkable. According to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the country was a net importer of wheat not long ago. However, thanks to a major expansion of summer and seasonal farming programs, the situation has undergone a radical change. Consequently, Ethiopia now leads the entire African continent in wheat output.

This season, more than 8 million hectares were allocated for wheat cultivation. As a result, production volume rose from approximately 28 million tons last year to 33 million tons this season. Therefore, the annual increase amounts to approximately 5 million tons — a truly exceptional gain in a single year. Moreover, the Prime Minister emphasized that this achievement stems from both the expansion of cultivated areas and significant improvements in agricultural production efficiency.

Livestock and Dairy Sector: Another Pillar of Ethiopian Agriculture

In addition to the grain sector, Ethiopia’s agricultural industry is actively developing its livestock sector. Specifically, approximately 500,000 liters of milk are being supplied to urban areas daily. According to the government, this contributes directly to improving the population’s standard of living. Furthermore, it reduces dependence on social welfare support across the country. Consequently, the livestock sector is emerging as a second key driver of rural economic development alongside crop production.

Ethiopia’s Potential to Reach 50 Million Tons of Wheat Production

Through the continued adoption of new technologies and the further expansion of cultivated areas, Ethiopia has the potential to reach a cereal production level of 50 million tons of wheat in the coming years.
