In its July report, the USDA lowered its forecast for the global sunflower seed crop in the 2024/25 marketing year by 0.6 million tons to 54.8 million tons.
The largest reduction came from Ukraine – by 0.2 million tons to 14.5 million tons, writes Latifundist.
Turkey is expected to harvest 1.6 million tons of sunflowers, while China’s production could increase by 0.15 million tons to 1.75 million tons.
USDA analysts also lowered global sunflower seed consumption and processing to 54.9 (-0.6) million tons and 50.8 (-0.57) million tons, respectively. The downward revisions for Ukraine and Russia amount to 200,000 tons and 500,000 tons respectively.
At the same time, the forecast for global sunflower ending stocks for the 2024/25 marketing year was raised by 0.1 million tons to 2.6 million tons, mainly due to an upward revision for China of 280,000 tons (+113,000 tons).
According to the July USDA report, Russian sunflower production in 2024/25 is estimated at 16.5 million tons, 3% less than the June forecast and 4% less than the previous year, but 6% more than the five-year average.
