According to APK-Inform news agency, the Ukrainian export market has been dominated by a trend of rising demand prices for feed barley since the beginning of last week.
Barley prices increased mainly due to the growing interest of China, which was accompanied by the increase in forecasts for imports of this crop in the September WASDE report, while at the same time global barley production decreased, which also contributed to the price increase. In addition, a similar situation in the neighboring wheat market, farmers’ reluctance to sell and potential difficulties in winter sowing in Ukraine due to the extreme drought – the Hydrometeocenter reports that 70% or more of the areas earmarked for winter sowing are currently affected by drought – contributed to the upward trend in prices.
Indicative demand prices for feed barley for delivery in September/October from Ukrainian ports have risen by a further USD 4-5/tonne and are quoted in the range of USD 182-190/tonne FOB as of September 16, 2024.
