Argentina’s sunflower harvest this year is projected to rise by 3.8 million tons, reaching a total of 4.7 million tons. This figure not only surpasses last year’s output but also marks the highest yield in the past 25 years.

According to industry experts from the German portal Oil World, whose data is cited by APK-Inform, this exceptionally large harvest considerably exceeds the country’s domestic processing capabilities. Nonetheless, Argentina anticipates processing up to 4.12 million tons of sunflower seeds in 2025, an increase from 3.78 million tons the previous year.

From January to March 2025, Argentina processed 858,000 tons of sunflower seeds, slightly less than the 880,000 tons handled during the same period last year. This trend of reduced domestic processing is expected to persist until August, with the majority of the crop likely to be processed during the latter half of the season.

The abundant harvest will also drive sunflower seed exports up to 125,000 tons, compared to 77,000 tons a year earlier. Additionally, final stockpiles are projected to grow to 560,000 tons.

Previously, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) report forecasted a decline in rapeseed and sunflower production across the European Union while predicting an increase for Russia. The global sunflower production estimate was revised downwards by 170,000 tons to 52.3 million tons. Russia’s production forecast stands at 16.7 million tons (excluding Crimea and newly incorporated regions), maintaining its status as the leading producer of oilseeds.
