Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia are considering replacing wheat with another supplier due to the decline in the French wheat harvest, writes Reuters.

The demand for wheat in African countries continues to rise due to the steadily growing population – from 69 million in 2000 to 97 million in 2024. There are also concerns about shortages in French supplies in the south of the African continent.

Wheat production in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia is expected to fall from 7.3 million tons in 2023 to 5.7 million tons in 2024, while the total demand for wheat is estimated at 32 million tons. Countries will have to import 19.5 million tons of wheat, compared to 17.1 million tons in 2023.

According to Argus Media’s forecasts, South African countries are considering the possibility of increasing their imports of Russian wheat.

According to Argus Media, France is expected to have its worst wheat harvest in more than 40 years in 2024.
