A hectare (ha) is a unit of area mainly used to measure land area. It is equal to 10,000 square meters (m²), 2.471 acres (approximately), 0.01 square kilometers (km²). The term “hectare” is composed of the Greek words “hekton” for “hundred” and “aroura” for “acre”. It was introduced as a metric unit in the 19th century to replace the traditional acre, which was based on the British imperial system.
