UN warns famine risk Asia Africa if Middle East conflict persists. Specifically, if the conflict drags on until summer, the number of hungry people worldwide will increase by 45 million, according to the UN. Furthermore, analysts believe that countries in Africa and Asia will be hit the hardest.
Global Hunger Projections and Vulnerable Regions
The organization estimates that in a worst-case scenario, global hunger rates will reach record levels. Moreover, currently, the number of hungry people worldwide is estimated at 319 million. Consequently, this is already a historical high.
The conflict has far-reaching consequences. Furthermore, the world’s most vulnerable populations are suffering the most from its impacts, the WFP emphasized. Additionally, countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia are particularly vulnerable due to their dependence on food and fuel imports.
UN Warns Famine Risk Asia Africa: Supply Chain Disruptions
It was previously reported that the Middle East conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have halted 50% of global fertilizer exports. Moreover, this could disrupt the planting season. Furthermore, it may trigger a food crisis in Europe and Asia.
Experts note that significant risks of reduced yields of rice, wheat, and other staple crops are already being realized. Additionally, as a result, the world is facing a new round of rising food prices.
