Tunisia’s Cereals Authority is planning to build new granaries for soft and hard wheat, as well as barley, and modernize the existing silos, built in 1985 and holding about 206,000 tons of grain. In this way, the country’s authorities want to ensure sufficient reserves within the framework of the grain sector reform program, Feedlot reported.

As specified by Salwa Benhadid Zouari, president and CEO of the state-owned company Cereals Office, which controls grain supplies in Tunisia, the new silos will be located in Rades (40 thousand tons), Sousse (58 thousand tons) and Sfax (38 thousand tons). The new silos are expected to cost about 205 million TND ($66.6 million), while the reconstruction is expected to cost about 143 million TND ($44.5 million). Zuari said the renovation of the silos will be done gradually to ensure a continuous supply of grain to the country.

She also added that the new storage capacity “will enable the procurement and storage of grain, capitalizing on opportunities in international markets.”

Currently, the Tunisian Cereals Authority’s nationwide storage infrastructure has a total capacity of 508,000 tons, including silos leased from the private sector.
