In January, Australia shipped 1.812 million tons of wheat, which included 3.681 tons of durum wheat, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This figure represents a 15% decrease from December’s exports, which totaled 2.132 million tons.
The leading markets for container shipments were Thailand (31,800 tons), Malaysia (28,700 tons), and Indonesia (26,100 tons). In the bulk export segment, the largest recipients of Australian wheat were Indonesia, receiving 269.3 thousand tons, followed by the Philippines with 250.4 thousand tons and Japan with 234.6 thousand tons.
Additionally, January saw the initial large shipments of the new crop, which commenced on October 1. Notably, 21 thousand tons were sent to Qatar, while 55 thousand tons were delivered to South Africa.
Overall, the total exports for January 2025 fell significantly from the 2.5 million tons recorded in January 2024, primarily due to a significant drop in shipments to China. In January 2024, China received 888.9 thousand tons of wheat, whereas in January 2025, exports to the country plummeted to just 2.7 thousand tons.
