According to UNICA, in the first half of December, 8.83 million tons of sugarcane were processed in South Central Brazil, down 54.3% from the same period of the previous season.
Sugar production totaled 347.8 thousand tons, down 63.1%, compared to the same period last year, while ethanol production decreased 27% to 764.5 million liters (498.6 million liters of aqueous and 265.97 million liters of anhydrous ethanol). Fifty percent of the total ethanol produced during this period was ethanol produced from corn – 379.16 million liters, a 35% increase over the same period in the 2023/24 season.
Since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, from April 1 to December 16, 611.85 million tons of sugarcane were processed in South Central Brazil, 4.3% less than the season before. Sugar production decreased 5%, to 39.71 million tons, while ethanol production increased 3.3%, to 31.93 billion liters (20.34 billion liters of aqueous and 11.59 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol). Ethanol production from corn increased 30% to 5.64 billion liters.
In the first half of December, 129 plants operated in South Central Brazil: 111 sugarcane refineries, 10 corn-based ethanol plants, and 8 corn-cane ethanol plants. During the same period of the 2023/24 season, 185 plants were processing sugarcane.
Since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, 206 plants have completed sugarcane processing operations. During the same period of the previous season, sugarcane processing was completed by 82 mills.
The amount of sugar removed from cane (TRS) in the first half of December reached 115.92 kg/t compared to 118.59 kilograms/ton for the same period in the 2023/24 season. TRS in the 2024/25 season (April 1 to December 16) averaged 141.33 kilograms/ton, an increase of 1.23% over the same period last season.
