Egypt will import the highest volume of wheat in the last 10 years – 14.2 million tons in 2024, compared to 10.8 million tons a year earlier, Asharq Business reported.
Meanwhile, government purchases of the grain are estimated at 6.2 million tons, up 30% from 2023 levels.
As noted, the increase was mainly due to the country’s surplus of the U.S. dollar, as well as a decline in global wheat prices to the $240 per ton level, compared to about $350 per ton in 2023.
