India plans to triple its wheat storage capacity over the next three years to 9 million tons from the current 2.8 million tons.
The Indian government is investing $15 billion to increase grain storage capacity. The expansion to 9 million tons in three years is part of a five-year plan to create an additional 70 million tons by building thousands of warehouses and bunkers across India. The large-scale construction of grain storage facilities will aim to provide storage for 100% of India’s grain production.
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) stores 40 to 50 million tons of rice and wheat under the National Food Security Act. According to Indian government data, India, which recently surpassed China as the world’s most populous country with a population of 1.4 billion, has storage capacity for only 47% of total grain production.
The government notes that India is the world’s second largest producer of wheat and rice, so the country needs more modern grain storage facilities to reduce post-harvest waste. The ongoing FCI Corporation has already completed the construction of silos for 3 million tons of storage, with the project planned to build wheat tanks at 196 locations across the country.
