Brazil has increased its quota for duty-free wheat imports by 250,000 tons until the end of 2024, in addition to the annual quota of 750,000 tons exempt from Mercosur’s Common External Tariff.
“The authorized quantities will have to be used by millers, who will have to continue importing until the Argentine and Brazilian crops arrive,” Rubens Barbosa, president of Abitrigo, said in an interview.
Brazil imported 4.56 million tons of wheat through August, about 65% more than in the same period last year, according to government data. Most of this quantity came from Mercosur member countries Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Using the tariff quota exemption, Brazil imported 501,000 tons from Russia, 256.6 thousand tons from the USA and 35,000 tons from Canada up to August.
The Brazilian wheat harvest is estimated at 8.8 million tons, which is higher than in the previous season, but the import window remains open.
