Rice prices in Japan rose by 28.3 percent in August compared to the same month last year, reaching their highest level since September 1975. According to the Japanese Ministry of Administration and Communications, this was due to a poor harvest last year, which was linked to the excessive heat.
Prices also rose because some people wanted to stock up their household supplies in case of natural disasters, the ministry said. Rice is still a staple food, although the use of bread has increased significantly.
Overall, food prices in Japan rose by 2.9 percent in August. This is due to the rise in prices of imported agricultural products as well as the effects of excessive summer heat.
