Biodiesel exports from Germany rose by almost 16% to around 1.7 million tons in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year, while imports also increased by 24% to 906,719 tons, the Union zur Förderung von Oel- und Getreidewirtschaft (UFOP) reported in its report.

Nevertheless, the export surplus was 0.76 million tons (previous year: 0.72 million tons), according to the association.

From UFOP’s point of view, the export of biodiesel is an extremely important valve for relieving the rapeseed oil market. The oil mills are still working at full capacity, so that the supply of rapeseed meal and rapeseed oil to the market is guaranteed.

Imports have risen for the third year in a row. According to research by Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (mbH), larger deliveries came from Malaysia and Belgium, while imports from Poland, Finland and Austria were below the previous year’s volume.

The Netherlands remains the most important trading partner on the German biodiesel market, accounting for 47 percent of exports and 52 percent of imports. The EU countries Belgium, Poland, Austria and France dominate among the countries purchasing German biodiesel.

According to the union, the USA imported just under 131,000 tons of biodiesel in the first half of 2024, around 46% less than in the same period last year.
