The European Union almost doubled its imports of Russian grain in June, from 6.5 to 11.8 million euros, before the introduction of increased duties on imports, according to an analysis of RIA Novosti data from Eurostat.
In physical terms, the increase was less significant – up to 43.4 thousand tons compared to 32.8 thousand tons in May. Both figures reached the highest level since March this year.
In particular, imports of wheat increased by 2.4 times, i.e. to 9 million euros, and those of buckwheat by 2.6 times, i.e. to 720 thousand euros. The most important importer in June was Italy, which increased its purchases fivefold to 7.2 million euros.
On July 1, the EU introduced higher tariffs on imports of grain, oilseeds and processed products from Russia and Belarus. Depending on the product, tariffs were increased either up to 95 euros per tonne of products imported into the EU or up to 50%.
