Analysts at Stratégie Grains are forecasting a volume of just 116.50 million tons for this year’s EU soft wheat harvest, which corresponds to a decline of 5.8 million tons compared to the previous year and the smallest harvest since 2018.

The expected decline in production is due to lower than expected grain yields in the leading producing countries France and Germany.

It should be recalled that the French Ministry of Agriculture has lowered the forecast for the common wheat harvest to the lowest level in the last 40 years – 26.3 million tons. According to FranceAgriMer monitoring data, 88% of the planted area had been threshed by August 5, which is below the average pace of the last five years.

The rains also delayed the harvest in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the 2024 wheat harvest could be 19.7 million tons, the lowest figure since 2003 and behind the harvest of 21.5 million tons in 2023.
