The gross sunflower harvest in Russia this year will be at least 15.6 million tons, not counting new areas, but due to the drought, yields in the south will fall. Such a forecast was given to field.rf magazine at the analysis center of the breeding company RUSEED.
“At the same time, seeds will continue to be among the most marginal crops, although their value is expected to increase. Moreover, the area planted is expected to increase next year,” RUSEED said, adding that in the southern regions, sunflower yields could drop to 21-27 quintals per hectare due to the drought.
According to RUSEED, the total area under sunflower cultivation in Russia in 2024 will be 10.5 million hectares (including new areas). At the same time, sowing has declined in many important growing regions.
At the end of 2023, the gross sunflower harvest in Russia was 17.3 million tons. According to Rosstat spring data, the sunflower sowing area in 2024 decreased by 0.6% to 9.75 million hectares.
