Turkey has increased its wheat purchases from Russia to the highest level since January this year by 140.3 million US dollars before the suspension of wheat imports from abroad, according to an analysis of Turkish customs data by RIA Novosti. Russia increased wheat exports to the country by 11 percent in June.
In early summer, Russia remained the only important supplier of this grain to Turkey: imports from Ukraine, traditionally the second most important exporter, fell eightfold to 2.1 million US dollars. In general, Turkey reduced its wheat imports in June by 0.8% to 143.8 million US dollars.
It should be recalled that Turkey is suspending wheat imports from June 21 to October 15 this year. It should be noted that this is one of the measures aimed at protecting local producers so that they are not affected by the fall in prices for this grain.
It is expected that Turkey’s 2024/2025 agricultural year wheat purchases will reach 8 million tons, which is the minimum figure for 6 years.
