According to local market participants, the drought in Morocco will lead to a significant reduction in wheat yields, with the harvest set to begin shortly. As a result, grain production in 2024 could be significantly lower than last year, reports Africa News.
It should be noted that Morocco has recorded rather low wheat harvests in the last eight years due to drought. Rainfall has also decreased in the current growing season and the fluctuations between minimum and maximum air temperatures are significant.
The Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture is forecasting a wheat harvest of around 3.12 million tons for 2024, which is 43% below the previous year’s figure of 5.51 million tons.
According to FAO forecasts, the country’s wheat imports could increase by 19% to 7.5 million tons per year in 2024. From January to June, the country already imported 2.5 million tons of common wheat, with France remaining Morocco’s largest grain supplier.
